1. The NRM owned Midland Spinner 673 at Butterley Station in August 1980.   2. Butterley Station with the original footings exposed prior to the re-erection of Whitwell Station building on the same plot. NRM owned LMS 4F 4027 passed with a train of Mk1 Suburban Stock that was used in the original days of operation at the Trust. Winter '80/'81.
3. NRM owned LMS 4F 4027 about to run round its train of Mk1 Suburban Stock at Hammersmith.   4. The re-built Ais Gill box painted in the original Midland Railway style in Summer 1984. the odd load in front of the box is the weedkilling wagon.
5. LMS 3F 16440 (BR 47357) in pseudo LMS livery taking water during Santa Special duties in Dec 1984 at what was then call Holmes Crossing.   6. S&DJR 7F 13809 passing Butterley with the Santa Special in Nov 1986.
7. The main site at Swanwick during re-erection of the former Wrigley's Wagon Works in November 1986. The newly arrived 2ft gauge Campbell Brickworks Simplex locomotive.   8. Matthew Kirtley Building during the August Bank Holiday 1988 and stock drawn out for display.
9. Butterley loco shed in the Winter of '84/'85 with MR 1F 1708 nearing completion in the background and J94 68012, both locomotive have since departed from MR-B. Behind the Trust's 50 ton steam crane is the BR 4MT 80098 recently arrived from Barry.   10. Ex-MR 1F 41708 converted to a full cab from its more normal half-cab form in the Winter of '85/'86.
11. LMS 3F 47357 with the Vintage train as it was in 1987, MR 6 wheeled Brake Third 253, LD&ECR 6 wheeled Third and LMS/BR Horsebox M42608   12. The Trust has re-built many buildings and the former Coal Agents offices from the St. Mary's Goods Yard in Derby provided the basis for this building, opened in 1993. Apart from a small office the building provides disabled toilets and parent and baby room.
When future funds are available the building can be extended in similar style.
13. A slightly odd looking BR Standard 9F 92214 is seen on a running-in trip in late July 2003. At this time the locomotive was running without smoke deflectors, which accounts for the non standard look. This engine was fresh from its restoration from scrap-yard condition.
Even on these test runs it soon became clear why the deflector plates were needed as smoke from the double chimney often obscured the driver's view.
  14. As part of the project to complete Swanwick Junction station a suitable building for the island platform was identified at Broom Junction in Warwickshire. Sadly when the Trust went to retrieve the structure the vandals had beat us to it but not before full details and measurements had been taken.
So in 2004 the construction of a faithful replica was begun, seen here just prior to slating the roof.
15. The Vintage Train seen standing at Butterley Station with the most recent addition being the third coach from the left. Midland Railway 4 wheeled Third Number 78 is the earliest surviving Midland coach. It was found built into a bungalow at East Bridgeford, Notts and restored by volunteers on site at Swanwick, entering traffic in 1996.
The Vintage train operates twice a year on May Day and August Bank Holidays.
  16. In 1998 the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust returned their second BR Standard 4MT Tank locomotive 80098 to steam following an extensive restoration from scrapyard condition. It is seen here waiting to leave Swanwick yard and join their other engine 80080 on its first day back in revenue earning service.
Later in the day both engines worked together on the service train.
17. During the years 1994, '95 and '96 the Trust was offered, recovered and rebuilt the "Tin Tabernacle" St. Saviours Church from Westhouses, Derbyshire. This church was built in the late 1890s by the Midland railway for the workers and families at this rather remote depot. During December 1995 the building had got to this stage in its re-erection.
Today the building still sees services on Celebration of Marriage and, rather more sadly, Burials.
  18. As the public are not generally allowed into any of the three working Midland Railway Signal Boxes, the Trust used the top part of the box from Linby South and placed it on a replica brick built base to act as a Demonstration Box. It was opened in May 1994 and has instruments a full lever frame and a gate wheel.
19. This winter shot of Jubilee Class 5690 "Leander" working an early Santa Special service is interesting as it shows that there was no rail access to the main site at Swanwick at this time. Additionally, the connection to main running line was in a Westerly direction (this is now reversed with the Swanwick signal box occupying this site).
The branch to Butterley Works can be seen climbing to the left of this shot.
  20. Here in 1990 the newly restored LMS Pacific 6203 "Princess Margaret Rose" is on shed at Swanick resting between running-in turns. The paint work remains to be completed and there is now BR emblem on the tender.
This locomotive was originally recovered from Butlin's holiday camp at Pwlleli and loaned to the Trust. When put up for sale the Trust was unable to raise sufficient funds but she was bought privately and has ultimately become the flagship of the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, based in the West Shed.
21. The Trust has seen many visiting engines but none have drawn the crowds like 4472 "Flying Scotsman". During a visit in June 1991 the engine is seen running round her train at Ironville.
In those days the running line only extended this far but within a few years was extended further east to the current terminus at Riddings, near Pye Bridge.
  22. The development of the Butterley Narrow Gauge Railway (now Golden Valley Railway) was still at the track laying stage when this shot was taken in 1989. There was a need to use improved track components before passenger operations could commence and there are new pointwork parts in the foreground with ballast hoppers behind the engine.
23. The site at the Midland Railway - Butterley has been used for a number of film and TV locations. In 1987 the BBC searched for local venues for the filming of D.H. Lawrence's “The Rainbow“ wich used the Vintage Coaching stock.
The most unlikely recording, though, was “The Tales of Rodent Sherlock Holmes“ featuring Roland Rat. The line even acquired a tunnel for this “epic“, by careful use of overbridges and blacked out carriage windows.
  24. During the early 1990's the Trust ran a number of events based on the 40s. Increasingly these events were attended by wartime re-enactment groups and their vehicles.
This shot from 1992 shows the front of Butterley station with a number of these restored vehicles. Following the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II these events declined but have recently been revived with great success.
25. Following the success of returning Princess Margaret Rose to steam, the PRCLT developed its own operation base on land adjacent to the Trust's main site at Swanwick and acquired, and then returned to mainline steam, LMS pacific 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. Here she is seen outside the West Shed in 2002 being prepared for mainline operations. The PRCLT continues to support the MRT with locomotives and by developing its own museum dedicated to the LMS pacifics.   26. When the line plays host to a visiting locomotive from another railway the chance is often taken to arrange a photographic charter. This shot, taken in 2001, features the NRM owned MR 2-4-0 158A, normally found in the museum, and the visiting Furness Railway No. 20 with a short freight train of vintage wagons.
These charters provide a valuable source of additional income to the Trust.
27. After many years discussion the Historical Model Railway Society (HMRS) decided to site their permanent Headquarters at Swanwick Junction. The Trust was heavily involved with the design and construction of the building adjoining the museum building. Here in the year 2000 the main structural work has been completed and awaits the start of bricklaying. The ground floor of this building is now regularly open to visitors demonstrating different layouts and scales, whilst archive and research facilities occupy the other two floors.
